aims of Fiachra Ó Luain
1) Green Economy

Fiachra Ó Luain will seek European Development Aid for a communications corridor, including road and rail to connect all centres of population from Cork to the border counties by way of Shannon and Connaght. A complete railway network will ease urban congestion and will be the backbone of the new Green Economy. This will ensure proper regional infrastructural development, including broadband and other services.

Environmentally sustainable energy including wave, estuary/tidal, wind and solar power must be urgently developed to generate safe power for the benefit of all citizens. Fiachra Ó Luain would like to develop electric car technology.

Ó Luain believes that Irish resources belong to the people and must never be sold off to private interests. EU fishing policies and quotas must be changed. Other nations must respect Ireland’s seas as we develop sustainable fishing techniques that will benefit future generations of Irish coastal communities.

2) Irish Neutrality

Shannon Airport must be returned to civilian and commercial use only. Fiachra Ó Luain will work with other progressive Europeans to ensure that we no longer become complicit in international wars of aggression. Irish participation in international military affairs must be kept strictly to United Nations Peacekeeping missions with no involvement in wars of aggression or spurious battlegroup arrangements.

Fiachra Ó Luain believes that European Union must respect the sovereignty of its member states and must respect the Irish, French and Dutch verdicts on the Lisbon Reform Treaty/European Constitution.

The Irish Constitution protects our citizens, our Republic and it is the moral compass of the nation. If elected, Ó Luain will bring the strength and spirit of Irish Constitutionality to Europe.

Our neutrality inspired India to use our constitution as a model for its own in 1947, it should also now become a model for Europe.

3) Health and Education

Ó Luain says "a healthy workforce is a wealthy workforce”. To ensure that our children are well nourished and healthy throughout their lives, we must teach them how food is grown. Ireland could be the ‘Garden of Europe’ if we were to realise our growth potential again. Ó Luain believes that we can fulfil our commitments in Europe and still support our local producers. Ó Luain is calling for the Government to make original Irish seed varieties available to all interested citizens to revive Irish agriculture and lower food prices.

Quality Health Care and Education must become available to all, the young and the elderly must be cherished equally. Retired people could be invited to classrooms to share their precious knowledge; this would help younger generations to deal with current challenges.

Ó Luain believes in the value of third level education and that the Erasmus exchange programme is one of the best example of European integration. He is against the reintroduction of fees or a ‘graduate tax’ as he thinks this would lead to new Irish emigration.

Who is Fiachra Ó Luain?

Fiachra Ó Luain speaks and understands more than four European languages and he will ensure that Ireland is never left out of the debate.

Educated between Cork, Donegal, Derry, Sligo and the University of Limerick, Ó Luain recieved a 1st Class Honours Degree in 2005. Ó Luain has given addresses in the Mexican Parliament, the Mexican National Library and the Berlinale Film Festival.

Most recently he addressed the Massachusetts Democratic Party about ethical investment days prior to the Obama inauguration. He honestly feels he is ready to represent the next step for Ireland’s North and West.

Ó Luain comes from a strong family background in preservation and innovation. His parents worked hard to stop Nuclear Power in Ireland. His grandfather’s work on native Irish seed varieties has helped preserve our native fruits and vegetables so that future generations can once again grow these native crops.

Ó Luain’s ancestor Richard Crosbie was the first Irish aviator and Fiachra is confident in the knowledge that anything is possible when the will is there to accomplish.
