about this person Fiachra Ó Luain
Fiachra Ó Luain comes from a strong family background with regards to sustainable living.

Fiachra’s grandfather, Dr. Keith Lamb was the Chief Horticultural Officer for An Foras Taluntais (The Agricultural Institute); Dr. Lamb’s research became the basis for Irish Seedsavers database for indigenous Irish seed varieties. His grandmother Mrs. Helen Lamb was Headmistress of Alexandra College in Dublin before becoming a mother. Both of his grandparents have written about the importance of conserving our environment. Dr. Lamb is the author of ‘A History of Gardening in Ireland’ and Helen Lamb’s poem about the destruction of our boglands was included in the book ‘Celebrating Boglands’ alongside the writings of Seamus Heaney and Tom Robinson.

Fiachra’s parents were both instrumental in the campaign to stop Nuclear power coming to Ireland in the late seventies and early eighties. They helped in the campaign against Desmond O’Malley’s plan for a Nuclear Power Plant in Wexford, and also helped stop Uranium mining starting in Donegal. Fiachra Ó Luain was one of the organisers of the 2002 ‘Shut Down Sellafield Campaign’ and raised these issues at the ‘Forum on Europe’ meeting in Limerick City Hall with former President of the European Parliament, Mr. Pat Cox. (See Irish Times January 21st 2002)

On September 11th 2002 Fiachra defended himself and won his court case against the British Trident Nuclear Submarines in Glasgow. Fiachra Ó Luain has been intimately involved in the defence of International Law at Shannon Airport since the 9-11 tragedies became the pretext for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Fiachra Ó Luain achieved a 1st Class Honours in Spanish and English from the University of Limerick. After graduation Fiachra worked on the Aran Islands Ferries to improve his Irish language and sea skills. While in Mexico as a Government Scholar, Fiachra gave addresses in the Mexican National Parliament and in the National Library of on the exploits of famous Irish people who have helped shape modern Mexican and American society.

In January 2008 Fiachra presented the historical ‘Winter Soldier’ documentary about the Vietnam War in the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Ó Luain’s father edited the film alongside the double Academy award winner Barbara Kopple in 1970.

This January Fiachra Ó Luain organised a trip for five Irish people who he felt truly represented the face of changing Irish society to be present at the Obama inauguration. Having maintained contact with most progressive elements of American society throughout the Bush years, Ó Luain was able to organise a meeting for his group with Professor Noam Chomsky and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, days before Senator Ted Kennedy invited the group to watch the Obama Inauguration from his offices in Washington. One of his guests included Dr. Edward Horgan, one of the many defenders of International Law at Shannon Airport.

Fiachra Ó Luain wants to continue this good work at the highest levels of international engagement and is open to work with any individual with progressive ideas regarding the creation of a strong Green Economy along the Atlantic Coast. This economy must benefit all members of society as Ó Luain believes that all resources below Irish soil and sea must belong to the Irish people. Ó Luain’s economic programme also includes the completion of the Western Rail Corridor and its extension to serve Donegal and the border counties. As an initial step towards economic recovery Fiachra Ó Luain calls on the Irish government to make seeds, planting information and allotments available to anyone who wants to grow their own vegetables. Ó Luain contends that such a move by the government would help soften the blow of the last budget as Irish food prices would drop by a large fraction within a year and life in Ireland would once again become affordable for the all citizens.
